I want my child to go to private school. What are the next steps?
Selecting the right school for your child is an extremely important decision. After looking through multiple programs and comparing public versus private education, you decide that private school is the best option. What are the next steps?
First, it is important to understand that private schools, unlike public schools, have an application or admissions process. This typically begins with a tour of the school to determine if it is a right fit for your family. Some schools require a tour, some do not, some require a parent or student interview, some do not. After determining one or two schools you feel are a good fit for your child/family, you will need to fill out an application. This can be a lengthy process so be sure to start as early as you can!
The following timeline is very typical of most private schools:
- Submit the application
- School reviews the child’s academic and behavior records
- Interviews with the parent(s)/caregiver(s), student, and family member(s)
- Student takes an entrance test
- School accepts or denies admission
- If accepted, student completes registration
Before starting an application, review the school’s website to understand if they have a specific way of handling the application process. Note any records or documents they require. In addition to academic records, you will also need:
- A current school physical (within the last calendar year)
- A birth certificate
- An updated shot record
Note that most schools may require you sign an agreement that you and your student will follow the school’s rules, conduct, values, etc. They may also require a registration fee to secure your child’s spot at the school, after acceptance. In addition to the registration fee, you may have to pay the first month’s tuition up front, depending on what time of year you apply.
