Alumni Spotlight: Janet H. Adkins, Trinity Christian Academy Class of 1983

Janet H. Adkins, a 1983 graduate of Trinity Christian Academy, has made significant strides in public service and leadership since her days as valedictorian of her class. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Adkins pursued her education with dedication, earning an associate degree from Florida State College at Jacksonville in 1985, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Science (magna cum laude) and a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Florida in 1987 and 1990, respectively.

Adkins began her career as an information technology specialist and eventually took on leadership roles, including a position as a client partner at Information Systems of Florida. Her commitment to education and community service led her to serve on the Nassau County School Board from 1998 to 2008, demonstrating her passion for enhancing educational opportunities for all.

In 2008, Adkins transitioned into politics, being elected to the Florida House of Representatives where she served until 2016. Representing the 12th District initially and later the 11th District, Adkins was a Republican voice in state government, known for her advocacy in educational reform and community initiatives. During her legislative tenure, she sponsored and supported various bills, including those aimed at regulating abortion services, showcasing her commitment to her values and her constituents.

Janet has continued to make a significant impact through her legislative work and philanthropic efforts. In memory of her daughter Emily, who tragically passed away from a pulmonary embolism at the age of 23, Janet co-founded a nonprofit called Emily's Promise. The foundation is dedicated to raising awareness about blood clots and pulmonary embolisms, advocating for preventative measures, and supporting research initiatives. Emily's Promise aims to honor Emily's legacy by increasing public knowledge and encouraging preventive healthcare practices to save lives.

Janet also played a key role in the passage of the Emily Adkins Prevention Act in Florida. This legislation established the first-ever Blood Clot Work Group in the state, which focuses on understanding the impact of blood clots on Floridians, improving standard care guidelines, and exploring new treatments. The law was passed with unanimous bipartisan support and was driven by Janet and her family’s commitment to preventing similar tragedies in other families (EmilyPromises).

Through these efforts, Janet Adkins has not only honored her daughter's memory but also contributed to public health advancements that will benefit many in the years to come​ (Blood Clots).

Beyond her professional achievements, Adkins remains actively involved in her community. She is affiliated with organizations such as the Bible Baptist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Rotary Club of Fernandina Beach. Adkins’ journey from Trinity Christian Academy to the halls of Florida’s legislature exemplifies her dedication to public service and her continuous efforts to make a positive impact on her community. Janet resides in Nassau Co. with her husband, Doug.
